Inflammatory Myopathy · Dutch Shepherd Inflammatory Myopathy · Myopathie beim Holländischen Schäferhund · IM in Dutch Shepherds · Muskelentzündung Holländischer Schäferhund
This is an inherited condition characterized by chronic inflammation of the skeletal muscles, which are the muscles responsible for voluntary movement. This persistent inflammation causes the progressive breakdown and degeneration of muscle tissue throughout the body. Because it is an autosomal-recessive disorder, it occurs when a puppy inherits two copies of the mutated gene.
Affected puppies typically begin showing symptoms between 3 and 9 months of age. Owners will usually notice progressive muscle weakness, a stiff or clumsy gait, visible muscle wasting, and difficulties with swallowing or breathing.
There is no cure for this progressive disease, and supportive therapies can only temporarily manage symptoms. Palliative care and diagnostic costs typically range from 1,000 to 3,500 EUR, and euthanasia is often necessary at an early age to prevent suffering.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
