Lethal acrodermatitis is an inherited metabolic disorder that affects a dog's skin and immune system. It is caused by an inability to properly process zinc, which leads to severe skin inflammation and a weakened ability to fight off infections.
Symptoms typically appear in early puppyhood. Owners will notice painful, crusted, and cracked paw pads, skin lesions around the face, slowed growth, and frequent infections.
There is no cure for this condition, and it does not respond to zinc supplementation. Supportive care to manage symptoms and infections typically costs between 500 and 3000 EUR, but due to the severe impact on quality of life, affected dogs are usually euthanized at a young age.
