Cleft lip with or without cleft palate · CL/P · ADAMTS20-related cleft lip and palate · Spaltlippe und Gaumenspalte · Lippen-Kiefer-Gaumenspalte
This is a congenital developmental defect of the skull and mouth, specifically associated with a genetic mutation in the ADAMTS20 gene in Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers. During embryonic development, the tissues forming the upper lip and the roof of the mouth, known as the palate, fail to fuse completely, resulting in a physical gap. Affected puppies may also exhibit syndactyly, which is the abnormal fusion of the toes.
The condition is visible immediately at birth as a noticeable split in the upper lip, the roof of the mouth, or both. Affected puppies typically struggle to nurse, choke frequently, and may have milk draining from their nostrils.
Treatment requires complex surgical reconstruction of the lip and palate during puppyhood, alongside intensive hand-feeding and supportive care. While these surgeries can correct the physical defects, they are highly specialized and typically cost between €1,500 and €6,000.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
