Lymphangiosarcoma is a rare, aggressive cancer that develops in the lining of the lymphatic vessels, which are part of the body's immune and fluid-drainage system. These tumor cells multiply rapidly, destroying nearby healthy tissues and frequently spreading to other parts of the body.
Owners typically notice firm, painful swelling or fluid buildup in the limbs or abdomen, often accompanied by bruising or discoloration of the skin. This condition is most commonly diagnosed in older dogs.
Management is challenging and typically requires a combination of aggressive surgery, such as limb amputation, and chemotherapy. While treatment is rarely curative and often focuses on comfort, the associated veterinary costs generally range from €2,500 to €7,500.
