This genetic condition affects the nervous system by impairing the blood-brain barrier, which normally acts as a protective filter for the brain. Due to a missing transport protein, certain common medications can cross this barrier unchecked and accumulate in the brain. This can lead to severe, life-threatening neurological damage.
Affected dogs show no symptoms unless they are exposed to specific triggering medications, which can occur at any age. If exposed, owners will notice signs of poisoning such as drooling, tremors, loss of coordination, disorientation, or seizures.
While the genetic defect itself is lifelong and cannot be cured, it is easily managed by strictly avoiding high-risk drugs. If accidental exposure occurs, emergency veterinary treatment is required and typically costs between 100 and 3,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
