This is a genetic skeletal disorder where multiple benign, or non-cancerous, bony growths capped with cartilage develop on the surface of a dog's bones, ribs, or spine. These growths, called osteochondromas, occur due to abnormal bone development as the skeleton matures. The condition primarily impacts the skeletal system but can affect nearby nerves and blood vessels as the growths expand.
Symptoms typically appear during puppyhood or adolescence, often manifesting as hard, immovable lumps under the skin. Depending on the location of the growths, owners may also notice lameness, pain, or coordination issues if the spine is affected.
The condition is treatable through surgical removal of the problematic growths, which is generally a one-time procedure per affected area rather than a lifelong treatment. The cost for surgical intervention typically ranges from 1,000 to 6,000 EUR depending on the number and location of the growths.
