CDH23-related deafness · CDH23-associated hearing loss · Cadherin-23 deafness · CDH23-assoziierte Taubheit · Congenital sensory deafness CDH23
This is an inherited form of deafness affecting the inner ear, caused by a genetic mutation in the CDH23 gene. This mutation disrupts the development and function of the tiny sensory hair cells in the ear that normally convert sound waves into electrical signals for the brain. Without these functioning hair cells, the dog cannot perceive sound.
Owners will typically notice that affected puppies do not respond to sounds, such as clapping, calling, or squeaky toys, from a very young age. This congenital deafness is usually apparent as soon as the puppy's ear canals open, around two to three weeks of life.
There is no cure or medical treatment to restore hearing, but the condition is painless and does not affect the dog's physical health. Management focuses on specialized hand-signal training, with typical supportive care and diagnostic costs ranging from 150 to 600 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
