Von Willebrand Disease Type I is an inherited bleeding disorder that affects the blood's ability to clot properly. It is caused by a deficiency in von Willebrand factor, a specific protein that helps blood platelets stick together to plug damaged blood vessels. Because this is an autosomal-dominant condition, a dog only needs to inherit one copy of the mutated gene to potentially show symptoms.
Owners may notice prolonged bleeding from minor cuts, during teething in puppies, during heat cycles, or after routine surgeries. While symptoms can appear at any age, they are often first noticed during young adulthood or during a dog's first surgical procedure.
While there is no permanent cure, the condition is manageable, with treatment typically needed only during surgeries, injuries, or emergencies. Supportive care, including specialized medications or plasma transfusions, generally costs between 500 and 3500 EUR depending on the severity of the bleeding episode.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
