This condition is a genetic predisposition to B-cell lymphoma, which is a severe cancer affecting the lymphatic system. In this disease, a specific type of white blood cell called B-lymphocytes, which normally help fight infections, begins to multiply uncontrollably. This abnormal growth disrupts the immune system and can spread to various organs throughout the body.
Affected dogs typically develop painless, swollen lymph nodes that can be felt under the jaw, in front of the shoulders, or behind the knees, usually during middle to older age. Owners might also notice general signs of illness such as lethargy, unexplained weight loss, and a decreased appetite.
While B-cell lymphoma is not curable, it is treatable with chemotherapy protocols designed to put the cancer into remission and improve quality of life. This management requires ongoing veterinary care, with treatment costs typically ranging from 2,500 to 8,000 EUR.
