Dog Erythrocyte Antigen 5 · DEA 5 blood group · Canine blood group DEA 5 · Hunde-Erythrozyten-Antigen 5 · DEA-5
DEA 5 (Dog Erythrocyte Antigen 5) is a naturally occurring blood group system in dogs, defined by a specific protein marker on the surface of red blood cells. It is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner, meaning a dog only needs to inherit the gene from one parent to express this blood type. This is a normal genetic variation rather than a disease, and it does not harm the dog's circulatory system.
This blood group does not cause any physical symptoms or health limitations, and it is present from birth. It only becomes relevant if the dog requires a blood transfusion, where receiving incompatible blood could trigger an immune reaction.
No daily treatment or lifelong therapy is required for this natural trait. If a blood transfusion is ever necessary, a standard blood typing test costing between 0 and 150 EUR is performed to ensure a safe match.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
