Chylothorax occurs when lymphatic fluid, which is a milky fluid containing fats and immune cells, leaks and accumulates in the chest cavity. This buildup of fluid puts pressure on the lungs, preventing them from expanding fully and making it difficult for the dog to breathe. The condition directly affects both the respiratory and lymphatic systems.
Owners typically notice signs of breathing difficulty, such as rapid or shallow breaths, coughing, lethargy, and a reluctance to exercise. While it can develop at any age, it is most commonly diagnosed in young to middle-aged dogs.
Treatment is complex and often requires surgical intervention to seal the leaking duct, alongside emergency fluid drainage and a strict low-fat diet. While surgery can resolve the issue permanently for some dogs, others may need ongoing medical management, with costs ranging from 2,500 to 7,500 EUR.
