Collie Eye Anomaly is an inherited developmental defect affecting the eye, specifically the retina (the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye) and the choroid (the underlying layer of blood vessels). This genetic condition causes these structures to develop abnormally before birth. It is primarily seen in herding breeds and is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner.
While mild cases may cause no noticeable symptoms, owners might observe signs of vision loss, bumping into objects, or sudden blindness during puppyhood if severe complications like retinal detachment occur.
There is no cure for the underlying defect, but mild cases require no treatment other than routine monitoring. Severe complications may require lifelong veterinary ophthalmology visits or specialized surgery, with costs typically ranging from €200 to €3,500.
