Retinal dysplasia is a congenital condition affecting the eyes, where the retina (the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye) does not develop properly during growth in the womb. This abnormal development leads to structural defects like folds or gaps in the retinal layers. Because the retina is responsible for sending visual signals to the brain, these imperfections can impair normal vision.
Signs are present from birth and are typically noticed in young puppies, though mild cases may cause no obvious symptoms at all. In more severe cases, owners might notice clumsiness, bumping into objects, or difficulty navigating in low light.
There is no cure or direct treatment to reverse this condition, meaning it is a lifelong state. Management is limited to regular veterinary eye examinations to monitor eye health, with lifetime costs typically ranging from 200 to 1200 EUR.
