Primary open-angle glaucoma is an inherited eye disease where the natural fluid inside the eye cannot drain properly. This fluid buildup causes a gradual increase in pressure within the eyeball, which eventually damages the optic nerve, the connection between the eye and the brain. Without management, this pressure leads to permanent blindness.
Symptoms typically appear in dogs between 3 and 6 years of age. Owners may notice gradual vision loss, dilated pupils, and redness in the eyes, though the early stages are often painless and easy to miss.
This condition is incurable and requires lifelong management with daily pressure-lowering eye drops and regular veterinary check-ups. In advanced stages, surgical removal of the painful eye may be necessary, with overall treatment costs ranging from €1,500 to €6,000.
