Corneal dystrophy is an inherited eye disorder where abnormal, opaque materials like fats or calcium build up in the cornea, which is the clear outer layer of the eye. This accumulation typically affects both eyes and is non-inflammatory, meaning it does not cause immediate swelling or redness. Over time, these deposits can disrupt the smooth surface of the eye.
Owners usually first notice small, cloudy, or white-gray spots in the center of one or both eyes, typically developing in young to middle-aged dogs. If painful ulcers develop, the dog may squint, tear excessively, or rub at its eyes.
While mild cases may not require therapy, painful ulcers require lifelong medical management or surgical intervention, with treatment costs ranging from 500 to 3500 EUR. Regular ECVO eye examinations are recommended for breeding dogs to screen for this condition.
