Imerslund-Gräsbeck syndrome is an inherited metabolic disorder where a dog's digestive system cannot absorb vitamin B12 from food. This inability to absorb the vitamin leads to a chronic deficiency, which impairs normal red blood cell production in the bone marrow and disrupts the nervous system.
Symptoms usually become noticeable in puppies between 8 and 12 weeks of age. Owners may observe poor growth, a lack of appetite, persistent lethargy, and weakness due to anemia, which is a low red blood cell count.
While the underlying genetic defect cannot be cured, the condition is highly treatable with lifelong vitamin B12 injections. Managing this condition over a dog's lifetime typically costs between 1,000 and 3,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
