Umbilical hernia
Also known as: Hernia umbilicalis · Nabelhernie · Bauchwandbruch · Nabelpfortendefekt · Nabelbruch · …
Overview
What it is
An umbilical hernia is a physical defect in the abdominal wall where the muscles around the belly button fail to close completely. This gap allows abdominal contents, such as fat or a portion of the intestines, to push through and sit just under the skin. It is a structural issue affecting the muscular and digestive systems.
How it presents
Owners will typically notice a soft, painless swelling or bulge near the puppy's belly button, which is usually visible within the first few weeks of life. In rare cases, if the tissue becomes trapped or pinched, the dog may experience sudden pain, lethargy, or vomiting.
Treatment
Small hernias may close on their own as the puppy grows, while larger ones can be permanently repaired with a simple, one-time surgical procedure, often performed during a routine spay or neuter. The cost for surgical correction typically ranges from 150 to 800 EUR.
