Spondylosis(SP)
Also known as: Spondylosis deformans · Spondylarthrose · Wirbelsäulenverknöcherung · Canine Spondylosis · Spondylose beim Hund
Overview
What it is
Spondylosis is a degenerative disease of the skeletal system, specifically affecting the spine. It occurs when the body creates bony spurs or bridges between the vertebrae, which are the individual bones of the spine, in an attempt to stabilize local joint instability. Over time, these bony growths can cause the spine to become stiff and less flexible.
How it presents
Symptoms typically appear in middle-aged to older dogs, manifesting as stiffness when rising, difficulty jumping, or a general reluctance to move. Owners may also notice signs of discomfort when the dog's back is touched.
Treatment
While the condition is chronic and cannot be reversed, it can be managed with lifelong supportive care such as pain relief, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy. The estimated lifetime management cost ranges from 1,500 to 6,000 EUR.
