Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome · ARDS in Dalmatians · Dalmatian ARDS · Akutes Atemnotsyndrom der Dalmatiner · Familial Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
This is an inherited lung disease in Dalmatian puppies that causes progressive damage to the alveoli, which are the tiny air sacs in the lungs responsible for absorbing oxygen. As these air sacs break down, the lungs can no longer transfer oxygen to the bloodstream, leading to sudden and severe respiratory failure.
Symptoms typically appear in young puppies between 3 and 6 weeks of age, starting with rapid breathing, coughing, and severe shortness of breath. These signs worsen very quickly over a matter of days.
There is no cure for this condition, and supportive veterinary care to manage symptoms typically costs between 300 and 1500 EUR. Because the disease progresses rapidly and is fatal, humane euthanasia is usually recommended to prevent suffering.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
