HACE1-related ataxia is an inherited neurological disorder caused by a genetic mutation that leads to progressive damage in the cerebellum, which is the part of the brain responsible for coordinating movement. Without a properly functioning cerebellum, the brain cannot accurately control the muscles, leading to a loss of voluntary motor coordination.
Owners typically notice symptoms during puppyhood or adolescence, starting with a wobbly gait, balance issues, and uncoordinated movements. Over time, these signs steadily worsen and may progress to noticeable tremors and difficulty standing.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, and management is limited to supportive care to maintain quality of life. Supportive therapies typically cost between 500 and 3000 EUR, though early euthanasia is often considered due to the severity of the disease.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
