Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (NCL) is an inherited metabolic disorder that affects the nervous system. It occurs when nerve cells in the brain and eyes are unable to properly recycle cellular waste, leading to a harmful buildup of these materials that permanently damages the tissues.
Symptoms typically begin to show between 1 and 3 years of age. Owners may notice behavioral changes, a gradual loss of vision, difficulty coordinating movements, and seizures.
There is no cure for this fatal condition, so treatment is limited to supportive care to keep the dog comfortable. Managing symptoms and providing palliative care typically costs between 1,000 and 4,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
