This is an inherited genetic disorder that simultaneously affects a dog's eyes, skin, and coat. It is caused by a genetic mutation that disrupts the normal development of the tear glands and the outer layer of the skin. This leads to a severe lack of tear production, known as dry eye, alongside abnormal hardening of the skin cells.
Symptoms are visible from birth, starting with an unusually rough, curly coat. As the puppy grows, they will develop painful, dry eyes, corneal ulcers, and itchy, scaly skin.
There is no cure, meaning the dog will require lifelong, daily treatment to manage eye lubrication and skin health. The estimated lifetime cost for this intensive supportive care ranges from 5,000 to 15,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
