Degenerative encephalopathy is a severe, inherited brain disorder caused by a genetic mutation in the RB1CC1 gene. This mutation leads to the progressive breakdown of nerve tissue in the brain, which severely disrupts how signals are transmitted throughout the central nervous system.
Symptoms typically begin to appear when a dog is between 3 and 5 years old. Owners may notice movement difficulties, behavioral changes like sudden aggression, and unusual choking or gasping spells while the dog is asleep.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, and veterinary care focuses on supportive measures to manage symptoms. Lifetime palliative care typically costs between €1,000 and €4,000.
