SOD1-related paroxysmal dyskinesia · Paroxysmale Dyskinesie (SOD1) · SOD1-associated dyskinesia · Familial paroxysmal dyskinesia SOD1 · SOD1-PD
This is an inherited neurological disorder affecting the nervous system, caused by a specific mutation in the SOD1 gene. It leads to temporary disruptions in the brain's motor control centers, resulting in sudden episodes of involuntary muscle movements. Between these episodes, the dog's nervous system functions normally and they appear completely healthy.
Owners will notice sudden, involuntary muscle spasms or abnormal limb movements that can last from minutes to hours, during which the dog remains fully conscious. These episodes typically begin during puppyhood or young adulthood and are often triggered by excitement or stress.
While there is no cure, the condition is manageable through stress reduction, dietary changes, or lifelong neurological medications. Management and diagnostic monitoring typically cost between 250 and 1000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
