Episodic Falling is an inherited neurological disorder where the nervous system fails to properly regulate muscle tone. When triggered by excitement, stress, or exercise, the muscles in the limbs temporarily tighten and cramp. This causes the dog to lose control of its movement, although they remain fully conscious throughout the episode.
Symptoms typically first appear between three and seven months of age. Owners will notice the dog developing a stiff, uncoordinated gait, which often leads to them falling over or freezing in place during periods of excitement.
The condition cannot be cured, but it is manageable through lifelong medication to reduce muscle spasms and by avoiding known triggers. The lifetime cost for veterinary management and medication typically ranges from 1,500 to 5,000 EUR.
