Fucosidosis is an inherited lysosomal storage disease, which means the dog's body lacks a specific enzyme needed to break down certain complex sugars. Without this enzyme, these sugars build up to toxic levels inside cells, causing severe and progressive damage to tissues, particularly the brain and nervous system.
Owners typically notice symptoms starting between 1 and 2 years of age, including a loss of coordination, behavioral changes, vision loss, and difficulty swallowing. These signs gradually and steadily worsen over time.
There is no cure for this condition, and care is focused entirely on keeping the dog comfortable. Palliative and supportive care over the course of the disease typically costs between 1,000 and 3,000 EUR.
