Primary Open Angle Glaucoma · ADAMTS10-related POAG · Primäres Weitwinkelglaukom · Grüner Star
Primary open-angle glaucoma is an inherited eye disease caused by a genetic mutation that impairs the normal drainage of fluid, known as aqueous humor, from the eye. This fluid buildup leads to a gradual, painful increase in pressure within the eyeball. Over time, this elevated pressure damages the optic nerve, leading to progressive vision loss.
The condition typically begins to show signs between 2 and 5 years of age. Owners may notice red eyes, dilated pupils that do not shrink in bright light, and a cloudy appearance over the surface of the eye.
While there is no cure, the disease requires lifelong management with daily pressure-lowering eye drops and regular veterinary monitoring. In advanced cases, surgical removal of the eye may be required to relieve pain, with lifetime treatment costs ranging from €2,000 to €7,000.
