Primary Open Angle Glaucoma · ADAMTS17-associated glaucoma · Primäres Offenwinkelglaukom · Grüner Star
Primary open angle glaucoma is an inherited eye disorder where fluid inside the eye cannot drain properly, causing pressure to build up. This increased pressure damages the optic nerve and retina, which are the structures responsible for sending visual information to the brain. Over time, this pressure buildup leads to progressive and irreversible vision loss.
Symptoms typically appear between 3 and 6 years of age and include red or bloodshot eyes, dilated pupils, and signs of eye pain such as squinting or rubbing the face. Owners will also notice a progressive decline in their dog's vision, which can eventually lead to complete blindness.
This condition is incurable and requires lifelong management with daily eye drops and regular veterinary monitoring. In some cases, surgical removal of the affected eye is necessary to relieve pain, with overall treatment costs ranging from €1,500 to €6,000.
