Acute Canine Polyradiculoneuritis · Coonhound Paralysis · Guillain-Barre-like Syndrome · Akute Polyradikuloneuritis · ACP
This condition, also known as Acute Canine Polyradiculoneuritis (ACP), is an acute, immune-mediated inflammation of the peripheral nervous system. The dog's immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves and nerve roots that connect the spinal cord to the muscles. This disrupts the electrical signals needed for muscle control, leading to weakness or paralysis.
Owners will typically notice a rapidly progressing weakness or floppy paralysis that starts in the hind legs and can quickly spread to the front legs and body. Affected dogs may become unable to stand or support their weight within a few days, though they usually still feel pain when touched.
While there is no direct cure, the condition is treatable through intensive supportive care, physical therapy, and proper nursing until the nerves recover. This is a temporary, one-time episode rather than a lifelong disease, with treatment costs typically ranging from €1,500 to €6,000 depending on the level of supportive care required.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
