Lipid-Hornhautdystrophie · Kristalline Hornhautdystrophie · Crystalline corneal dystrophy · Stromale Hornhautdystrophie
Hornhautlipiddystrophie is a benign, inherited eye condition where fatty substances, known as lipids, build up within the cornea, which is the clear outer layer of the eye. This accumulation creates cloudy, whitish-gray spots in the eye tissue. Because these deposits are typically small and do not cause inflammation, they rarely interfere with a dog's vision.
Owners will typically notice circular, silvery-white or gray spots developing in the center of both eyes, usually when the dog is between 1 and 6 years of age. The condition is entirely painless and does not cause redness, squinting, or discomfort.
Active treatment is rarely necessary because the condition does not cause pain, though a low-fat diet is sometimes recommended. Veterinary costs generally range from 150 to 800 EUR, which primarily covers routine eye examinations to monitor the condition over the dog's life.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
