This is an inherited nervous system disorder where the protective outer coating, called the myelin sheath, surrounding the nerves is improperly formed. Without this protective layer, the nerves cannot properly transmit electrical signals from the brain to the muscles. This disruption leads to progressive muscle weakness and coordination issues throughout the body.
Owners will typically notice signs of muscle weakness, an uncoordinated or wobbly gait, and difficulty standing starting in early puppyhood. These symptoms gradually worsen over time and can eventually lead to an inability to walk.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, and management focuses entirely on supportive care to maintain comfort. Lifelong supportive care and veterinary assessments typically cost between 1,000 and 5,000 EUR, though euthanasia is often considered early due to the severity of the disease.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
