Congenital Hypomyelinating Polyneuropathy · HPN · Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 4C · CMT4C
This is an inherited disorder of the peripheral nervous system where the protective outer coating, known as the myelin sheath, of the nerve fibers does not develop properly. Without this insulation, the nerves cannot transmit signals effectively from the brain to the muscles. This leads to progressive muscle weakness and coordination issues.
Owners typically notice gait abnormalities, weakness in the hind legs, and coordination problems starting when the dog is just a few weeks to months old. These symptoms gradually worsen over time and can eventually lead to paralysis.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, so treatment focuses on lifelong supportive care, physical therapy, and mobility aids. Managing these ongoing needs typically costs between 1,500 and 7,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
