Hypothalamic malformation · Hypothalamus-Dysplasie · Congenital hypothalamic dysfunction · Hypothalamische Dysplasie
Hypothalamic dysplasia is a congenital brain malformation affecting the hypothalamus, which serves as the central control center for the body's hormone system. This region of the brain is responsible for regulating essential functions such as body temperature, appetite, and water balance. Because the hypothalamus does not develop correctly, the dog's body cannot maintain normal internal stability.
Symptoms typically become noticeable in young puppies and include stunted growth, extreme lethargy, and difficulty maintaining body temperature. Owners may also observe abnormal eating and drinking behaviors, such as excessive thirst.
This condition is incurable and requires lifelong hormone replacement therapy alongside regular veterinary monitoring. Lifetime management is costly, with treatment expenses typically ranging from €3,000 to €12,000.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
