Immunoglobulin A (IgA) deficiency is an immune system disorder where the body does not produce enough IgA, which is a key antibody that protects mucosal surfaces. This weakens the local defense system of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts, making the dog more vulnerable to infections and chronic inflammation in these areas.
Owners typically notice symptoms during puppyhood or adolescence, which commonly include recurrent respiratory infections, chronic diarrhea, or persistent skin issues. Some dogs with this deficiency may remain completely healthy and show no symptoms at all.
While there is no cure, the condition is manageable with lifelong symptomatic care, including targeted antibiotics, specialized diets, and skin treatments. Managing these chronic secondary issues typically costs between 1,500 and 6,000 EUR over the dog's lifetime.
