Juvenile Laryngeal Paralysis and Polyneuropathy (JLPP) is an inherited neurological disorder affecting the nerves and muscles of the throat and limbs. A genetic mutation impairs the signals sent from the brain to the larynx (voice box) and peripheral nerves, leading to progressive paralysis. This makes it difficult for the dog to breathe, swallow, and control its movement.
Symptoms typically appear in puppies between 10 and 15 weeks of age, starting with breathing difficulties, heavy panting, coughing while drinking, and a hoarse bark. As the disease progresses, owners will notice weakness and coordination loss in the hind legs, which eventually spreads to the front legs.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, and management is limited to supportive care to keep the puppy comfortable. Owners can expect diagnostic and palliative care costs to range between 500 and 2,500 EUR, though most affected dogs are humanely euthanized at a young age.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
