Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy (JME) is an inherited neurological disorder affecting the brain and nervous system. It is caused by a genetic mutation that leads to abnormal, uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain. This disruption in normal brain signaling results in sudden, involuntary muscle twitches, which are referred to as myoclonus.
Owners will typically notice sudden, brief muscle jerks or twitches, especially when the dog is resting, relaxing, or falling asleep. These symptoms usually first appear in young dogs between the ages of 6 weeks and 18 months.
While the condition is lifelong and cannot be cured, it can be managed with daily anti-epileptic medications and regular veterinary monitoring. Managing this chronic condition over the dog's lifetime typically costs between 2,000 and 7,000 EUR.
