CPT1A cataract · Carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A cataract · CPT1A-associated hereditary cataract · Grauer Star (CPT1A-assoziiert) · Hereditärer Katarakt (CPT1A)
This condition is an inherited eye disorder linked to a defect in the CPT1A gene, which is involved in cellular fat metabolism. The genetic variation causes the lens of the eye to lose its natural transparency and gradually become cloudy. This cloudiness prevents light from passing through the lens to the back of the eye, progressively impairing the dog's vision.
Owners will typically notice a cloudy or greyish-white appearance within the dog's pupils, which usually begins to develop at a young age. As the cloudiness worsens, the dog may show signs of vision impairment, such as bumping into objects or hesitating in low-light conditions.
While the underlying genetic cause cannot be cured, vision can be restored through a one-time surgical procedure to remove the cloudy lenses. This specialized surgery is highly effective and typically costs between 2,000 and 6,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
