FYCO1 cataract · Juvenile Cataract FYCO1-related · Hereditary Cataract FYCO1 · FYCO1-associated cataract · Grauer Star (FYCO1)
This inherited eye condition is a form of cataract, which is a progressive clouding of the eye's natural lens. It is caused by a genetic mutation in the FYCO1 gene that disrupts the normal cellular structure and clarity of the lens. This prevents light from passing through to the back of the eye, gradually impairing the dog's vision.
Owners will typically notice a cloudy, whitish, or bluish-grey haze developing inside the dog's pupils, often starting during puppyhood or young adulthood. As the cloudiness progresses, the dog may show signs of vision loss, such as bumping into furniture or hesitating in unfamiliar environments.
The condition cannot be cured with medication, but vision can often be restored through a one-time surgery to remove the cloudy lens and insert an artificial implant. This specialized ophthalmic procedure generally costs between €2,500 and €6,000.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
