Lafora disease is an inherited brain disorder caused by an abnormal buildup of starch-like compounds inside the nerve cells. This accumulation gradually damages the central nervous system, preventing the brain from functioning normally. Over time, this leads to progressive neurological decline and recurrent seizures.
Symptoms typically begin around 5 years of age, often starting with sudden muscle twitches or jerks triggered by flashing lights, sudden sounds, or movement. Owners may also notice generalized seizures, progressive vision loss, and signs of dementia, which worsen over time.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, but symptoms can be managed using lifelong anti-epileptic medications and dietary adjustments. Managing this disease requires ongoing veterinary care, with lifetime costs typically ranging from €2,000 to €7,000.
