This is an inherited neurological disorder caused by a genetic mutation affecting the peripheral nervous system, which controls the muscles and limbs. It leads to progressive laryngeal paralysis, meaning the vocal cords and airway cannot open properly, alongside widespread nerve damage. This combination severely impairs both the dog's ability to breathe and their coordination.
Symptoms typically appear within the first few months of life. Owners will notice noisy or labored breathing, changes in the dog's bark, difficulty swallowing, and a progressive weakness or wobbliness in the legs.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, and management focuses on supportive care or diagnostic confirmation, which typically costs between €1,000 and €4,000. Because the disease worsens rapidly and severely impacts quality of life, humane euthanasia is often considered.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
