This is a congenital developmental disorder of the eyes where the eyeball does not grow to its normal size, a condition known as microphthalmia. It is accompanied by coloboma, which refers to structural gaps or missing tissue in parts of the eye such as the iris or retina. Because these structures fail to fuse properly during embryonic development, the eye's ability to function is severely compromised.
Affected puppies are born with abnormally small, deep-set eyes, which become noticeable as soon as they open their eyelids. Owners may observe signs of impaired vision or complete blindness, such as the puppy bumping into furniture or hesitating in unfamiliar surroundings.
The condition is incurable, requiring lifelong environmental adjustments and regular veterinary monitoring to manage secondary complications. Lifetime care and supportive treatments generally cost between 1,000 and 4,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
