Multiple System Degeneration, also known as Progressive Neuronal Abiotrophy (PNA), is an inherited neurological disease where specific areas of the brain, particularly the cerebellum, prematurely waste away. The cerebellum is the control center responsible for coordinating voluntary movements and balance. As these brain cells degenerate, the dog gradually loses the ability to control its motor functions.
Symptoms typically begin between 3 and 6 months of age, starting with mild tremors, balance issues, and an unsteady gait. These coordination problems rapidly worsen over time, eventually making it impossible for the dog to stand or walk on its own.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, and supportive care or diagnostic testing typically costs between 500 and 2000 EUR. Because the disease severely impacts quality of life, humane euthanasia is eventually necessary.
