Narcolepsy(NARC)
Also known as: Narkolepsie · Canine Narcolepsy · Hypocretin Receptor 2 Mutation · Schlafkrankheit bei Hunden
Overview
What it is
Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder affecting the brain's ability to regulate sleep and wakefulness. It is caused by a genetic defect in the receptors for hypocretin, which is a chemical messenger in the brain responsible for keeping the animal awake. Without functioning receptors, the brain cannot properly control the transition between being awake and asleep.
How it presents
Owners typically notice symptoms starting in puppyhood, often triggered by excitement like playing or eating. The dog will suddenly collapse into a brief sleep-like state with limp muscles, but will quickly wake up and return to normal activity once the episode ends.
Treatment
While there is no cure, the condition can be managed long-term with lifestyle adjustments to reduce excitement and daily medications. Lifelong management and veterinary monitoring typically cost between €1,500 and €5,000.
