Tränenkanalverstopfung · Tränen-Nasen-Kanal-Stenose · Nasolacrimal duct atresia · Imperforate lacrimal punctum · Epiphora
This condition involves a blockage or malformation of the nasolacrimal duct, which is the drainage tube that normally carries excess tears from the eyes into the nose. Because the tears cannot drain properly, they overflow onto the face. This affects the ocular (eye) system and can be congenital, meaning the dog is born with an incomplete or closed drainage opening.
Owners will typically notice constant watery eyes, wet fur beneath the inner corners of the eyes, and reddish-brown tear staining. These signs are often visible in early puppyhood if the dog is born with the blockage, but they can also appear later in life.
The condition is treatable, often resolved with a one-time flushing of the tear ducts under anesthesia or a minor surgical procedure to open a closed pathway. The typical cost for these procedures ranges from 150 to 1200 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
