This is a severe inherited disorder of the nervous system caused by a genetic mutation. It leads to abnormal swellings along the nerve fibers, which disrupt the transmission of signals between the brain and the rest of the body.
Symptoms typically appear between a few months and one year of age, starting with uncoordinated movement, tremors, and temperament changes. These signs progress rapidly as the dog loses control over its limbs.
There is no cure for this condition, and care is limited to supportive, palliative measures to keep the dog comfortable. Managing the disease until euthanasia is necessary typically costs between 500 and 2,500 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
