This is a severe, inherited nervous system disorder caused by a genetic mutation in the TECPR2 gene. It leads to neuroaxonal dystrophy, a condition where the nerve fibers, or axons, in the brain and spinal cord swell and progressively degenerate. Because these damaged nerve cells cannot properly transmit signals, the dog's neurological function steadily declines.
Symptoms typically appear between 6 and 12 months of age, starting with a loss of coordination, tremors, and abnormal movement patterns. These issues worsen rapidly, often accompanied by noticeable behavioral changes.
There is no cure for this progressive disease, so treatment is limited to supportive care to keep the dog comfortable. Managing these symptoms throughout the dog's life typically costs between 500 and 2,500 EUR before humane euthanasia becomes necessary.
