VPS11-related NAD · Neuroaxonal Dystrophy Rottweiler Type · VPS11 neuroaxonal dystrophy · Rottweiler NAD · Neuroaxonale Dystrophie
This is an inherited neurological disorder affecting the brain and spinal cord, caused by a genetic mutation in the VPS11 gene. The mutation leads to progressive damage and swelling of nerve fibers, known as axons, which are the pathways that transmit signals throughout the nervous system. As these fibers deteriorate, the brain loses its ability to communicate properly with the rest of the body.
Symptoms typically appear between a few months and two years of age, beginning with mild coordination issues. Owners will notice worsening movement disorders, tremors, a head tilt, and an increasingly unsteady gait.
There is no cure for this progressive disease, and veterinary care is focused entirely on keeping the dog comfortable. Supportive care and eventual humane euthanasia typically cost between 500 and 1,500 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
