Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis type 5 (NCL 5) is an inherited disorder that affects the dog's nervous system. It is classified as a lysosomal storage disease, which means the cells' natural recycling centers fail to break down waste products properly. This leads to a harmful buildup of fatty pigments in the brain cells, causing them to gradually break down and die.
Affected dogs usually start showing symptoms between one and two years of age. Owners typically notice behavioral changes such as aggression or confusion, alongside a loss of coordination and progressive blindness.
There is no cure for this progressive disease, so treatment focuses entirely on supportive care to maintain comfort. Palliative care and symptom management over the dog's remaining life typically cost between 1,000 and 3,500 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
