What it is
Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis Type 10 (NCL-10) is an inherited metabolic disorder that affects the central nervous system. Due to a genetic mutation, the dog's body lacks a vital enzyme needed to clear cellular waste, leading to a harmful buildup of fat-protein deposits inside the brain's nerve cells. Over time, this accumulation damages and destroys these cells, causing progressive neurological decline.
How it presents
Owners typically notice symptoms starting between 9 and 12 months of age, including uncoordinated movement, tremors, behavioral changes, and progressive vision loss. These signs tend to worsen rapidly as the disease progresses.
Treatment
There is no cure for this fatal condition, and treatment is limited to supportive care to keep the dog comfortable. Managing symptoms and providing palliative care typically costs between 1,000 and 3,500 EUR before euthanasia becomes necessary.
