Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis type 8 (NCL8) is an inherited metabolic disorder that affects the dog's nervous system. It is caused by a genetic mutation that prevents cells from breaking down waste products, leading to a harmful buildup of fatty pigments inside nerve cells. Over time, this accumulation damages and destroys vital brain tissue.
Symptoms typically begin to appear between one and two years of age, starting with vision loss, behavioral changes, and an unsteady gait. These signs worsen rapidly and often progress to severe coordination problems and seizures.
There is no cure for this disease, and treatment is limited to supportive care to keep the dog comfortable. Managing these symptoms over the dog's remaining life typically costs between 1,000 and 3,000 EUR, and humane euthanasia is eventually recommended to prevent suffering.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
